Photosynth builds 3d from 2d

Photosynth is a 1yr old technology that, as the name suggests, synthesizes photos from any source, such as flikr, to build strange and beautiful 3d environments.

I like this because it's very democratic and copyleft.*

I have yet to see this technology used to enrich a web experience, but I definitely expect to see it in the future. The plugin needed to use Photosynth technology is Microsoft's Silverlight, and the Mac version is just now catching up in functionality (no surprise).

Here's an interesting TED.org video introducing the technology, as well as Seadragon, which is a (presumably vector-based) zoom tool on crack that allows you to navigate lots of visual information very quickly. It's also owned by Microsoft.

Whether we develop with these technologies or not, the aesthetic they create is pretty unique and inspiring. Have fun.
