Big Fish | Top Flash Animations
I have always been intrigued by cartoons and love that Flash gives us this capability. Big Fish is a flash animation firm that showcases some of the top flash animations and even has a contest.

Books in a Portfolio

Lily Lin's Portfolio.
She makes her books an animated gif, I believe, and it works well to see how the entire book flows quickly. She follows it up with detailed shots to appease the masses.

Type embedded in SWF files?
After you guys asked me about the fonts in SWFs, I wanted to check to be sure I was correct. I was half right...it seems that you do not have to embed the font, as long as your type is Static, and not Dynamic or Input text. So, for those of you who were having font issues previously, you may want to check to see if your text is set as Static (down in the Property inspector).

3D Sphere Rotation Using AS3
There were some questions on Friday about 3D rotation in Flash CS3 (ActionScript 3.0). While this does not do exactly what we were talking about, it gets relatively close. If I find out more, I'll post it here as well.

I really like VideoCoPilot.net for AE tutorials and other resources. Many people might already know about them, but they a good resource to keep in mind.

Design Trends
As we all know there is a popular trend of incorporating symbiotic design elements. I too have jumped on this bandwagon. Several good examples can be found below:

Cool portfolio websites
This is a nice website that was featured in one of Communication Arts webpicks of the day

Danielle's Web Design References
First off, there's an obvious trend within art and design portfolio websites in which all the links are on the left and the image or piece of art appears in the middle of the site when a link is selected. I noticed this trend after Rudy showed me a number of beautiful yet simple portfolio sites last semester.
Turns out they are all using this pre-made interface here: Indexhibit.org.
An example of this implemented can be seen at: J-Trav's Portfolio
Secondly, I noticed that Pitchfork had an awesome design for their multi-media section of their website. It's incredibly long and you scroll left to right to get to different pages rather than hitting links that take you to seperate sites.
Check it out here: Pitchfork TV
And it's really nice looking too!

Happy New Year, Seniors!
I guess this will be your last semester for the majority of you! It would have been nice to have one more week of vacation, but we'll be all right. ;) We'll definitely have a short class tomorrow, but we'll be starting our first Flash project this Thursday!
To start our multimedia journey:
Technology and media timeline from 1969 - 2008...an interesting progression.
Also, I recommend that you read "Weaving the Web" by Tim Berners Lee, typically considered to be the father of our world wide web. His website, the W3C (the World Wide Web Consortium) makes available optimal usability best practices and standards for web design. I definitely enjoy making websites usable and attractive (which you will do with your own site), but typically websites that adhere to the W3C's standards are not the most beautiful sites ever...however, they can call themselves W3C compliant, which carries some weight.
