Why Do I Love Multimedia Design?

We can play retro video games in class and consider it "research"!

Cool Game Salad app

If you have a mac computer, an iPad or an iPhone and a extra buck to spend, consider buying this cool game called Citrus Samurai. You can buy it in the app store here. Don't forget that in order to buy things from the App store, you need to have an iTunes account created.

This game was created in Gamesalad too.

13 free iphone apps to make your life easier

It's pretty crazy how ridiculous some of these apps sound at first, but after you use them for a couple weeks, it's hard to image life without apps! I think the function that some apps have in our daily apps is really interesting. Check out this article with some of the latest apps that "you can't live without"

I have always wondered how scientific visuals are coordinated between the designers and the scientists. Imagine the research needed to make something like this accurate.

Silent Conversation

Since we're heading into game design, I thought I'd post this really cool game by Gregory Weir. It's a dynamic reading game with platformer style controls. I'd explain more, but it makes you play a tutorial level when you check it out anyway.

Illustration and Editorial.

I was doing some searches on illustration on behance, and came across this unique approach to editorial design. From the brief overview it gave, it looks like they where inspired and then created and adaptation to Jack Kerouac's iconic Beat novel, 'On the Road'.

Vector vs. Raster Tutorials

For some reason, I've never noticed this before (maybe because I don't use it often enough), but Illustrator is apparently notorious for turning certain effects (such as inner glow and drop-shadow) into raster graphics, which can really pixelate (and ruin) your beautiful vector graphic. Although I've tried to convert it by changing the DPI, I still can't seem to get rid of the pixelation without completely rebuilding my graphic.

With that said, here's some tutorials that offers alternatives to building graphics around these effects.

Facebook

Check out this Facebook Redesign project on behance.

Based on your experiences with facebook and what you find important, do you think this design is effective?

Buy a girl

I saw this on my Communication Arts magazine and I feel inlove with the concept.

I encourage you all to check out the site

I love to see people that successfully use design to help other people.
The idea is to help girls stay in school by buying them supplies.   The design is beautiful, and I think it's  really clever to ask for specific items for specific girls instead of just asking for generic donations.

Here's some screen shots

But, seriously - please check it out. The girls that you see pictured have moving videos in the site - it's really quite beautiful and sweet.

App Inspiration

Here's some inspiration for designing UI for apps! Dribbble is a great resource to keep up with whats trending in the design world!

Video Backgrounds on Websites - Yay or Nay?

I first saw this concept on ZARA and you can check it out here. They had these videos as their background for the website during Fashion Week. Here is another example of the same concept and layout ZARA used. What do you think about using videos as a background image? Do you think is visual enhances the site or does it appear to be too distracting and busy?

Beautiful Mistakes

Beautiful ad / typography using crumpled up paper.

Interesting Fashion Design Video

Video promoting a clothes designer's fashions using a stop motion animation-like technique. What I really like is the interaction between the model and the environment and how nicely the video transitions between different colors and styles.

The Fun Theory

One of the things I love most about graphic design is the impact we have as designers. We can make people want something, we can persuade, tell a story with a look or a typeface, we can change the world. With the world wanting things faster, better than ever before and with this kind of responsibility it's easy to forget how design can be simple and yet so effective.
Here's The Fun Theory, "dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people's behavior for the better."
The following video is a campaign to convince more people to use the stairs instead of the escalator.

Holy Sheep!!!

Yeah...so this is basically the coolest into ever...why can't I do this?

In case anyone else is working with Windows

Here's a short game tutorial that goes over some of the things we learned in class. The interface is a bit different, so this might help to bridge that gap.

Move Across Scenes

This will come in handy for my app, since I think I'll have Odysseus' ship sail across scenes.
