Using the "root" function

For those of you working on your websites in Flash and using frames instead of scenes you may find this code very useful. If you have a nested movie clip and need to jump to back to a frame in the main timeline once it has completed playing, do the following:

On the actions layer inside the nested movie clip place a keyframe in the actions layer at the end of the timeline.

Insert the code:

MovieClip(this.root).gotoAndStop(4);

You do not need a stop; function. 4 is the frame number you'd like to jump back to on the main timeline. Therefore, you'd need to change that depending on what frame you want to call up.

Photo Gallery in Flash A Go!

Finally got the darn thing to work, after following a tutorial that was using ActionScript 2.0! D:<

But I was able to reference between my projects and Google to look up ActionScript 3.0 coding to get the job done. *phew* Now to apply that to my website project.

:D

Maurice's Website

I visited Maurice's website for the first time, and I was impressed with the interaction for this website! :) The blurred focus effect was quite interesting as you roll over the buttons, as well as the animation that starts the website (how the website introduces its' menu and such).

Check it out! :)

Japanese Website Ideas

This is a preliminary design for Sean's educational website. As you can see, he wanted a site that intruduced the Japanese language in an interactive way. I created a geisha character to be kinda like the host of the site. Also, the icons at the top represent a different page where you will find games, music, a dictionary...etc.

Website Planning Fail

Unfortunately, we see things like this pretty often. I suppose the person who "planned" the site didn't really know why he had a pointless site map page. He just thought it was something that was supposed to be on a website.

Don't jump to any assumptions when picking your pages. You might need some of the conventional pages (home / about / services / contact) but try to personalize them and be intentional about how you organize information.

Website Ideas

I've been thinking about what to do for my website, so I Google searched and found some sites that gave ideas for what to make websites about. One of them was a movie review website, which I think would be a lot of fun. I absolutely love watching movies, however my opinions would not be very critical because I usually love most of what I see.
Another idea was a bucket list website, where I would make a list of everything I want to do before I "kick the bucket".

I'm leaning more towards the movie review website because I think I could make more pages out of it and it could be something I could continue with.

But one more idea was one that would consist of a quiz about which of the "Five Elements" you are. It's based on a Chinese "science" and you take a personality quiz and it tells you whether you are a fire, water, earth, metal, or air element. That one would also be pretty cool.

Any favorites from anyone else?

Scene Navigation

I know many of you guys are using scenes this time when creating your e-cards. After spending some time watching Lynda tutorials and then using the Adobe website I was able to create a code that you can use to navigate to the next scene in your animations.

It's a simple process and I'll try my best to make it clear. If you need help, feel free to email me (bhbiros@gmail.com) or I can help you in class.

Scene 1:

1.) In scene 1 create a button and give it an instance name of "nextBtn."

2.) Create an actions layer and in that layer put a blank keyframe at the end of your timeline.

3.) Then copy an paste the following actionscript into the blank keyframe you created:

stop();

nextBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, newScene);

function newScene(event:MouseEvent):void
{
gotoAndPlay("intro", "Scene 2");
}

4.) Finally, go to Scene 2 and create a new layer with 1 blank keyframe at the very beginning of your timeline. Under properties, label this layer "intro." You must do this because in the code a function was create that tells Flash to go to Scene 2 and begin play at "intro." If you do not label a place in Scene 2 for Flash to begin playing, it will not know where to start playing (causing an error).

*This process is then repeated for the all your scenes. HOWEVER, you must give each button you create a different name (i.e. next2Btn, next3Btn, next4Btn) AND you must create a new function name (i.e. newScene2, newScene3, newScene4). FINALLY you must also change the name for the beginning keyframe in each scene (i.e. intro2, intro3, intro4). If you fail to do so, you will receive errors for having duplicate names.

Your code for Scene 2 to jump to Scene 3 should look like this:

stop();

next2Btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, newScene2);

function newScene2(event:MouseEvent):void
{
gotoAndPlay("intro2", "Scene 3");
}

Hope this helps. It sounds more confusing that it really is. Hopefully I made the process clear.

Photosynth builds 3d from 2d

Photosynth is a 1yr old technology that, as the name suggests, synthesizes photos from any source, such as flikr, to build strange and beautiful 3d environments.

I like this because it's very democratic and copyleft.*

I have yet to see this technology used to enrich a web experience, but I definitely expect to see it in the future. The plugin needed to use Photosynth technology is Microsoft's Silverlight, and the Mac version is just now catching up in functionality (no surprise).

Here's an interesting TED.org video introducing the technology, as well as Seadragon, which is a (presumably vector-based) zoom tool on crack that allows you to navigate lots of visual information very quickly. It's also owned by Microsoft.

Whether we develop with these technologies or not, the aesthetic they create is pretty unique and inspiring. Have fun.
